This quilt was inspired by a design by Donna Thomas. The familiar school house block has been re-drafted to provide space for a six-inch "sampler" block within its boundaries.
Thirty blocks were created by thirty different members of the Kingston Heirloom Quilters. Members chose their preferred techniques, or challenged themselves in a new area, to include hand and machine piecing, hand applique, and embroidery.
All the blocks were joined with sashing and corner blocks, and a border of flying geese was added. The additional border brought the dimensions up to a standard queen size quilt.
The quilt was donated to Kingston Literacy to help them raise needed funds. It was raffled at Quilts Kingston 2005 and was won by L. Stuper from Kingston, Ontario.
